Bridge-Building 101: October Series

Our workshop series is off to a great start - there is still time to join starting this Tuesday for the last three workshops!

Join us for a free workshop series that will help us to build bridges and strengthen relationships in ways we might not have thought possible. Activities will include hearing from community members “human library-style”, learning and practicing techniques for responding to high-tension situations, practicing asking curious questions to open dialogue, and finding avenues for action in our community.

All sessions will be held at Northwood University at the Plaster Center, 7:00– 8:30pm on each Tuesday of October, in partnership with Northwood’s student DIG (Diversity & Inclusion Group).

Previously celebrated as Cultural Awareness Month, Global Diversity Month is observed each year in October as a way to recognize the diversity that surrounds us. As we live in a multicultural society, we come together to acknowledge, celebrate, and accept every individual in our community with their unique differences. Global Diversity Month means to bring us together and embrace and celebrate our unique values, traditions, and cultures. Culture can be explored through traditions, food, music, art, religion, and more.

Join the Disability Network of Mid Michigan on October 14, 21, and 28 for more films in their Demystifying Disability Film Series this month! Screenings in Midland are at 5 pm at the Eagle Ridge Church of God. Details are HERE.

Moth stories are true stories that center around a theme. This months theme: There is Beauty and Strength in Diversity. Would you like to tell a story? Beauty in Diversity: Sparking Fire, Speaking Truth, an Audre Lorde Poetry Experience

Celebrate Global Diversity Month by listening to selected works from the intersectional warrior poet Audre Lorde. Audre Lorde was an American writer, professor, philosopher, intersectional feminist, poet, and civil rights activist. Details are HERE.

Featured Community Resource

The Affordable Housing Alliance of Midland County (AHA) is a nonprofit organization that owns 93 rental properties in Midland County, Michigan. They rent these properties to qualified people – those who earn 30-50% of Midland’s median income – at below-market rates. Their goal is to strengthen our community by helping meet the need for lower-cost housing.
