Signs Still Available and Native American Heritage Month

Three More Chances to Get Your Sign This Fall

We are happy to make these signs (this time in yellow!) available to the community once again! Since we distributed 1,000 signs across the community between 2021-2023, residents have asked for them numerous times.
It was wonderful to talk to so many community members at the Midland Area Farmers Market a few weeks ago and give away over 100 signs! We have three more chances for you to pick yours up this fall.

Distribution Dates:
TODAY! Thursday November 6 - Creative 360 - 5:00-7:00 pm
Tuesday November 11 - Creative 360 - 6:00-8:00 pm
Sunday November 23 - MI Element - 2:00-4:00 pm

Suggested Donation: $10 to help cover sign costs. Please give if you’re able—everyone is welcome to a sign for their yard, window, home, or business! You can reserve one in advance, or pick a sign up during any of the dates and times above.

An article about our work and the Hate Has No Home Here signs appeared in the Midland Daily News this weekend. Below is an excerpt; you can read the whole piece here.

“Hate Has No Home Here” both calls us in to be more understanding of each other – to not assume the worst! – and to have the courage to call out the most odious forms of hate when they rear their heads. The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. captured both of these elements in an address in Mount Vernon, Iowa, on October 15, 1962. He began by stating how upending hate requires meaningfully communicating with those we’re separated from:

“I am convinced that men hate each other because they fear each other. They fear each other because they don't know each other and they don't know each other because they don't communicate with each other, and they don't communicate with each other because they are separated from each other. And God grant that something will happen to open channels of communication, that something will happen because men of goodwill will rise to the level of leadership.”

We are not enemies, and we can be powerful examples to each other of what it means to live in relationship across difference. It is not always possible, but we at least have to make sure that the barrier between us is not rooted in misunderstanding or prejudice, as it so often has been in our history. Can we be the leaders that we so badly need right now?

Have you visited the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways in Mt. Pleasant? This award-winning museum and cultural center, established in May of 2004, is a vibrant hub for preserving and celebrating Anishinabe culture.

Located on the lands of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe, the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture & Lifeways is dedicated to sharing the rich heritage of the Anishinabe people. It features a permanent exhibit about this history of Native People in our region, rotating exhibits, educational programs, and cultural events that honor traditions, history, and contemporary life.

The center serves as a resource for both tribal members and the public, fostering understanding and respect for Indigenous lifeways. Visitors can explore art, artifacts, and storytelling that reflect the enduring spirit of the Anishinabe. The museum is open for public and group tours, including for work and school groups. Whether you're seeking knowledge, connection, or inspiration, Ziibiwing offers a meaningful experience rooted in cultural pride.
